Chiropractors Vs Physiotherapists

Chiropractors and physiotherapists both aim to help improve an individual’s musculoskeletal health but can differ greatly in their approaches. This can sometimes make it difficult to decide the best method to achieve your desired results. In this short and swift guide, we’ll explore the various methods, strategies, and situations that each treatment may deal with to help you decide which is best for your healthcare needs.

What is a chiropractor?

A chiropractor examines how the alignment and movement of the spine, pelvis and extremity joints impact your movement and the muscular and nervous system. This helps them to identify and address the underlying cause of your symptoms. To do this they will:

  • Take a detailed case history and perform an appropriate physical exam to evaluate your symptoms.
  • Use a variety of techniques such as spinal manipulation and soft tissue therapy to help with any pain or inflammation.
  • Recommend specific home exercises or suggest lifestyle adjustments to help reduce pain and inflammation and improve on mobility.
  • Discuss other methods and ways forward if further treatment is needed.

What is physiotherapy?

Physical therapy focuses on enhancing movement and mobility, typically through tailored exercises, occasionally manipulation, and soft tissue treatments. These treatments are commonly designed to address specific issues, e.g. rehabilitation exercises after surgery or an injury.

A physio will:

  • Educate and advise on ways to improve movement and function with exercises.
  • Use hands-on approaches to relieve pain and improve quality of life.

What can they treat?

Both of these healthcare disciplines aim to improve physical function and relieve pain. However, their approaches have a distinct focus and methodology that makes them beneficial in different areas.

Physiotherapy is most commonly known for treating sports injuries or pain, through stretching and strengthening exercises. However, this practice can be used for other forms of treatment such as recovery and management of neurological conditions, stroke, cystic fibrosis and any issues following a heart attack. They can also work towards achieving general well-being and fitness in their patients. The patient should commit to working on exercises given outside of their sessions to see the desired results.

Chiropractors often use manipulation to alleviate problems related to joints, muscles, other soft tissues e.g. discs and ligaments, and nerves. Again, neck and back pain are the most common conditions a chiropractor will treat as these are closely related to spinal conditions. This is a very hands-on practice which aligns the musculoskeletal system commonly focussing on the spine.

Qualifications

Physios will usually complete a three-year degree or a two-year master’s degree (if they possess an undergraduate degree in a related science or sports rehabilitation). Courses recognised by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy are widely acknowledged.

Chiropractors often have higher qualifications, completing a four or five-year degree programme or master’s degree which is typically necessary for this profession. There is a lot of clinical experience involved and they usually complete at least a one-year placement in a clinical chiropractic setting. This can be completed during the undergraduate training programme. Once qualified, they must register to become a practicing chiropractor with the General Chiropractic Council.

Who to choose?

Both practices can reduce pain and stiffness, improve mobility, and promote a holistic approach. This can lead to faster recovery and great long-term health benefits.

If your back, neck or joints feel locked or sore then a chiropractor is the best person to see. They can also help patients with pain in their elbows, knees, and hips. Doctors frequently recommend patients to chiropractors when other treatments have not worked. They are highly skilled and can enhance musculoskeletal health using hands-on techniques.
